Drug Rehab Programs in West Virginia

West Virginia has been plagued with some of the highest rates of drug dependence and abuse, particularly for those age 18-25. During 2006 there were more than 7,000 rehab admissions in West Virginia and 65% of these were due to the use of illicit drugs. Drug rehab programs in West Virginia have reported drastic increases in admissions mentioning the use of opiates other than heroin as well as substantial increases in admissions for the use of only drugs. One of the most alarming increases has been the almost four fold increase of admissions mentioning the use of both alcohol and drugs, accounting for 31% of admissions during 2006. According to data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, during 2006 almost 10% of the population in West Virginia, more than 120,000 citizens, reported past month use of an illicit drug. Additional data from the 2006 NSDUH indicates that approximately 45,000 West Virginia citizens reported past year drug dependence or abuse, and another 29,000 reported past year drug dependence alone. Considering that only 4,927 individuals entered rehab in West Virginia, it is obvious that citizens of West Virginia are not receiving the proper treatment.

Cocaine Abuse Ends with Jail or Rehabilitation in West Virginia

Throughout West Virginia both cocaine and crack are readily available and also widely abused. Many communities in rural areas have been affected by the crack sales along with the high levels of violence directly associated with distribution. Cocaine accounted for nearly 70% of the Federal drug cases in West Virginia during 2006.
