West Virginia has been plagued with some of the highest rates of drug dependence and abuse, particularly for those age 18-25. During 2006 there were more than 7,000 rehab admissions in West Virginia and 65% of these were due to the use of illicit drugs. Additional data from the 2006 NSDUH indicates that approximately 45,000 West Virginia citizens reported past year drug dependence or abuse, and another 29,000 reported past year drug dependence alone. Considering that only 4,927 individuals entered rehab in West Virginia, it is obvious that citizens of West Virginia are not receiving the proper treatment.
